We need your help!
Lighthouse 2010 needs
helpers! The number of children we can accept is determined by
the number of helpers. It may be possible to accept
more children if we have more helpers.
Helping as
an Adult at
Lighthouse
People with a variety of different skills are required to help the
Lighthouse activity week run smoothly
Helpers are needed to look after small groups of
children, for craft, drama, sport, ‘mainstage’ worship (music and singing),
registration, crèche, car parking and for many other areas. In most cases your
involvement can be built around the time you are able to commit; you do not need
to be able to help every day.
There are also jobs for people who cannot attend during the week, including
publicity, help with photocopying and distributing information and other
administrative tasks.
During the Lighthouse week the day starts at
9am for helpers with a briefing session
for each team followed by a short worship session for all who are involved in
running the activities. Children who are registered to attend Lighthouse, and
who have a parent who has to be there at
9am, will be entertained by volunteers during this
time
(no other children can take part in these activities). The crèche is
also open from
9am for
younger children.
The remaining children arrive at
10am.
They are registered and taken to join the Lighthouse Keeper and the rest of
their group. Children who attend Lighthouse are organised into small groups of
about 10 children of the same age. Each group of 5-9 year olds is looked after
by a Lighthouse Keeper (an adult or young person aged 18+) with the help of 1 or
2 Lamplighters (young people aged 12 -17).
All groups of the same age stay together for most of the day. During the day
they take part in activities including sport, craft and drama. Each activity
lasts for half an hour and all the children of one age group do the same
activity at the same time – approximately 30 – 35 children. All age groups do
all activities every day, so the craft team, for instance, will work with 5
different groups of children during the day.
The
Lighthouse Keepers and Lamplighters are responsible for their group
during the day, but each activity is run by a specialist team
supported by the Lighthouse Keepers and Lamplighters for the group.
Children go home at 3.30pm after a final fun
worship session. Helpers will normally attend a short debriefing
session with their team before going home.
Training sessions for helpers
Everyone involved in running the Lighthouse activity week has to attend a
training session before the week starts. Training is vital to ensure that you
know what is planned for the week so that you can help the children get the most
out of their Lighthouse experience.
Training sessions will be held nearer the time and details will
be posted here
Sessions will last 2 hours for new helpers. Those who have helped at
Lighthouse before should come for the second hour of the session.
At the training session you will be given a Handbook which contains
important information about the Lighthouse week and your role in it.
You should read this thoroughly before the Lighthouse week.
