We need your help!

Lighthouse 2010 needs helpers!  The number of children we can accept is determined by the number of helpers.  It may be possible to accept more children if we have more helpers.

Young Helpers at Lighthouse

Most young helpers aged 12 to 17 at Lighthouse are Lamplighters. The following explains what a Lamplighter does.

Children aged 5 – 9 who attend Lighthouse are organised into small groups of about 10 children of the same age. Each group is looked after by a Lighthouse Keeper (an adult or young person aged 18+) with the help of 1 or 2 Lamplighters. Ten and eleven year olds will have a separate programme of activities.

Lighthouse days start at 9am with a briefing session for all helpers and a short worship session. You would be welcome if you wish to join the worship session, or you can help look after the children of helpers.

Children arrive at 10am. Lamplighters meet the children who are in their Lighthouse after they have been registered and take them to join the Lighthouse Keeper and the rest of the group.

All groups of the same age stay together for most of the day. During the day they take part in activities including sport, craft and drama. Lighthouse keepers and Lamplighters help with the activities and encourage the children to join in and have fun during the day. Your role is to be a friend to the children in your group, to get to know them and to help look after them.

You and your Lighthouse Keeper are responsible for the children in your group, all the group will eat lunch together. You may not leave the site during the day unless specifically arranged in advance.

The children go home at 3.30pm. Your final task is to help your Lighthouse keeper sign out the children and tidy up. We hope you will go home having really enjoyed each day.

Other roles

If you are aged 15+ there may be opportunities to help in the crèche or with one of the specialist teams such as sport or drama. If you would like to be considered to help in one of these areas, please indicate this on your application form, saying what experience you have in this area.

Training sessions for helpers

Everyone involved in running the Lighthouse activity week has to attend a training session before the week starts. Training is vital to ensure that you know what is planned for the week so that you can help the children get the most out of their Lighthouse experience.

Training sessions will be held nearer the time.

Sessions will last 2 hours for new helpers. Those who have helped at Lighthouse before should come for the second hour of the session. There will be separate training sessions for adult helpers at the same time and venue. Please let us know which session you will be attending.

At the training session you will be given a Handbook which contains important information about the Lighthouse week and your role in it. You should read this thoroughly before the Lighthouse week.
